what is the area called where soft clay/mud comes out of the ground that looks like a mud spring? it happens near creeks on hill banks.

- Bog is the usual term for the mud fields adjacent to a creek or river. If it forms a thin normal-looking crust that makes it dangerous to those who do not know it is a bog, it tends to be called "quick sand". You can also get breeches or washes where the bed of the stream on a hillside is perforated and the river bed begins to leak out through the strata that was holding it.
