Why is my drain clogged with mud and dirt?

my bathroom sink always over flows because the drain is clogged with mud and/or dirt why is this happening? Whenever I turn on the water it never goes down the drain and my sink gets filled with dirt. Where could this dirt and mud be comming from and how can I get rid of it?

  1. Are you on a well. You could be getting it from your water.
  2. If you have a well, it may be sucking up dirt from the well. If you have city water, you may have a small crack in the pipe to your dwelling. You would have to repair the pipe. I f you have a well, you would have to call a well driller for his expert opinion.
  3. it may be a drainage line busted and coming back up into your drain when it is trying to drain
  4. Dry well or a cranked well pipe., Just something that happened to me.
  5. YOU HAVE A DRAIN LINE THAT IS ROTTED OUT AND THE MUD FALLS INTO THE PIPE AND PLUGS IT UP. YOU CAN PROBABLY OPEN IT UP WITH A SMALL AUGER BUT IT WILL MOST LIKELY PLUG AGAIN. THE FINAL SOLUTION MAY BE TO REPLACE THE BAD DRAIN LINE IF IT HAS A LARGE HOLE IN THE LINE. YOU SHOULD DIG IT UP AND SEE HOW MUCH OF A PROBLEM TO REPLACE A SECTION OF IT. THE ORIGINAL IS PROBABLY OLD CAST IRON AND CAN BE REPLACED WITH PVC. IT CAN BE A REAL BIG/EXPENSIVE PROBLEM IF YOU HAVE IT BURIED UNDER A CONCRETE SLAB FLOOR. THE EXPENSE WILL DEPEND ON HOW MUCH OF THE WORK YOU CAN DO YOURSELF.
  6. Your drain line probably has a crack in it that lets dirt and roots in your drain line. Does your toilet drain when the sink is backed up? If not your main line needs to be cleared or replaced.
