How do you play an online rpg/dnd text game?

Like the ones on livejournal or messageboards, where everyone works within rules and a world, there's a DM and you post stuff. How do they organize the system etc?

1. Usually they're very specific according to what game it's based on, you'll need to ask the DMs of the particular board you're interested in participating. Oh, are you asking how to organize and start running one? No idea, I was just a player back in the day.
