  1. TRY,TRY And TRY................
  2. A few thoughts - What is it that you are trying to do that hasn't been done with another system? Take a look at elements you like from existing systems and steal ideas from them. What feel will your game have? Pulpy action filled combat? Involved political intrigue? Tactical combat? Deep characters focusing on role playing? -Based upon the feel you can steal rules sets. What setting will your world entail? Future? Fantasy? Modern day? WW2? Victorian? World of Dinosaurs? Post apocalyptic? Greek heroes? Dark 1920's horror? Western? Weird West? Time travel? Space? - Are there any movies that really connect with your idea of the setting? How powerful are the characters? Are they gods among (wo)men? Are they average Joe's? Is there magic? Wonderful technology? What is of value? How detailed with the rules are you looking to get? Will a simple rock-paper scissors do for every action? Will a 3 or higher on a six sided die mean success? Is there a main story/plot you're looking to follow or will the game be open to players whims? Who are the protagonists? Who are the antagonists? How do players choices and actions effect the world around them? Advice: Get a sense of your game and then develop a rules set that lets you do what you want. -Dungeons and dragons relies upon the 20 sided die, add in pluses and compare to difficulty. -Whitewolf relies upon a "success" system where every point a player has in a skill gives them an extra die. In which they are hoping to get higher than say a roll of 7 (or 8 for hard tasks; or two or three successes). -Savage Worlds relies upon "four or higher" for success. Players increase their skill by increasing the die they get to roll. IE a skill could be a 4 sided die, 6 sided die, 10 sided die etc. -Chaosium uses percentile - IE a character may have a 40% in repair. If they roll equal to or under on % they succeed. Don't be afraid to tweak/refine things as needed.
